Earthquake of magnitude 5.7 at India-Nepal border, tremors felt in Delhi
New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale and with an epicentre in Nepal shook parts of north India, including capital Delhi and its suburbs on Monday evening. There are no reports yet of damage or loss of life. (Read: Tweets on quake)
Reports from Noida and Gurgaon and parts of Delhi said strong tremors were felt, with furniture shaking in buildings. Tremors were also felt in Lucknow and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and mild tremors were reported in Shimla in Himachal Pradesh too. (Felt quake? Comment here)
Indian Meteorological Department said the 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck at 5.02 PM and was of "moderate" intensity. However, the US Geological Survey Department put the magnitude at 5.4 on its website.
"The quake was epicentred at Indo-Nepal border," the officials said, adding, "There will be no aftershocks."
The epicentre, on the Nepal side of the India-Nepal border, was 130 km away from Haldwani in Uttaranchal and 363 km from Delhi.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has said that the nuclear power plant closest to the epicentre of the earthquake, in Narora, UP, is unaffected. Both reactor units of the Narora nuclear plant were operating normally, the NPCIL said. The quick assurance came in view of the huge quake and tsunami in Japan last month crippling a nuclear plant which has been leaking radiation ever since.
Surfers are writing in at NDTV.com to describe their experience. S Gopi wrote in from Munsyari at the Indo-Nepal border to say, "Experienced strong tremors in Munsyari, located at the remote area of Indo-Nepal border...heavily shocking the people...But..we are safe...Thanks God."
"The earthquake was pretty strong and was there for more than 15-20 seconds. It shook the entire building," wrote Pankaj from Noida.
Gaurav Chopra said, "It was around 5 then everything in the office (Gurgaon) started shaking... The monitors were shaking and people started running to the open area around the buildings..There was a sense of panic for sure..."

India‘s $35 tablet
After hitting the roadblock for over six months, the Indian government backed ambitious low-cost tablet project is finally set to take off.
According to latest media reports, the low-cost $35 tablet codenamed 'Sakshat' is expected to launch by the end of this month. The country's answer to the $100 laptops developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be powered by Linux OS and is made by HCL Technologies.
As for the specs, the 7-inch touchscreen tablet will come with inbuilt keyboard, video conferencing facility, multimedia content, Wi-Fi, USB port, 32GB hard drive and 2GB RAM. The tablet will support Open Office, SciLab and Internet browsing.
According to reports, government has decided that 10,000 Sakshat tablets will be delivered to IIT Rajasthan in late June. Also, over the next four months more than 90,000 tablet units will be ready for launch and will come at a price of Rs 2,200.
Reports claim that the government later plans to further subsidise the cost by 50 per cent which means the device may cost somewhere around Rs 1,100.

New Delhi: The moon turned a shade of red on Wednesday diving into the darkest centre of the earth's shadow in the century's longest and darkest lunar eclipse.
This beautiful spectacle was visible all throughout the country. The century's longest total solar eclipse lasted 100 minutes, starting at just before 1 AM and ending at half past two.
Usually in a lunar eclipse the moon turns brown but in this eclipse the moon turned black and at some places a copper red thanks to the volcanic ashes in the atmosphere.
At Delhi's Nehru planetarium there was almost a carnival to witness this event. Various astronomy clubs had set up their telescopes and were even helping skywatchers to see the moon clearly. Space - an organization behind astronomical activities in schools also had telescopes and binoculars set up for the enthusiasts.
Apart from other astronomy events around the eclipse space also had something called chand ka langar around the city where they distributed food to the people to burst the myth that you should not eat during an eclipse.
The last eclipse longer than this one occurred in July 2000 and in case you missed this one you will now have to wait till the year 2141 to see an eclipse of this duration.

Google Voice Search for desktop computers, which the Web giant launched today, isn't much more than the company porting a technology that's been on mobile phones for a while to PCs. But don't write it off as a trivial bit of technology too quickly. Voice Search on the desktop moves computing one step closer to the natural user interface that's been the holy grail of computing for decades.
The feature isn't much different from the service that Google offers to smartphone users with its mobile app. Instead of tapping a microphone icon on a phone's screen, users click on a microphone icon in the search box at www.google.com while they are using Google's Chrome browser. Of course, the user's computer has to have a built-in microphone, or the user needs a headset, in order for the service to work.

Madras, Truchi and Coimbatore prisons will have the off campus recruitment drive after the successful placement in the Tihar jail by IGNOU. IGNOU has study centers at the above mentioned prisond for the prisoners.
A meeting of the jail superintendents and trainers will be held soon to finalize the placement action plan for job fairs.Last campus drive held at New Delhi Feb, 25 which is the successful drive conducted by IGNOU.
